Origin Story
The history of Toarmina’s pizza is actually the history of the Toarmina family.
- Santa Toarmina (grandmother to the company founder) was the first to come to the USA. She arrived in Detroit, Michigan, and soon entered the pizza business there. It didn’t take her long till she realized that the Americans have different taste for pizza. She found out they preferred sweeter sauce.
- Another family member, Andy Vitale, (cousin to the company owner) founded a pizzeria in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He came to another discovery – the Americans loved more cheese on their pies.
- Furthermore, these family foundations were united in Toarmina’s pizza, founded by Lou Toarmina in 1987.
- Today, this Michigan based pizzeria operates on more than 20 locations in Southeastern Michigan, serving delicious pies to the locals.
Toarmina’s Pizza Culture
At Toarmina’s pizza they serve fresh, piping hot pizza every day. They prepare fresh dough daily, shred the cheese, cut the meat and vegetables in store.
Their pizza chefs toss the dough by hand, to create a regular, thin-crust round pizza, or deep-dish pies. Furthermore, they make gluten-free pies, gourmet, and specialty pizzas.
But what’s so special about Toarmina’s Pizza is the 24-inch large pizza. Each slice of it is a foot long, loaded with quality toppings. At Toarmina’s, they believe that “to call any pizza smaller than 24 inches ‘large’ is a misrepresentation”.
Moreover, their medium pie is 16, and the small pizza is 12 inches. All pies are loaded with cheese and toppings, making them heavier than most other pies.
