One thing that can be said about the state of California is that it's rightfully proud of the food it produces. Many people in the hospitality industry, namely the chefs, love to make use of the top-quality fresh ingredients readily available to them and the pizza chefs of North Hollywood are no different. For that reason, North Hollywood is known for California-style pizza. California-style pizza is basically only a traditional Italian thick crust pizza, but one topped with ingredients grown in California. The dough recipe doesn't vary from the original and the layering of sauce, additional ingredients, and cheese is all done in exactly the same way on a California-style pizza as it's been being done in Italy and in various other places around the world for centuries. It has to be said though, using state-grown ingredients in creative combinations does lift the basic pie from being very humble food to something easily classed as gourmet.
When you want the best delivery pizza in North Hollywood and incidentally, one that looks as if it could have come straight from Italy, give Angelino's Trattoria a call. This pizzeria on Lankershim Boulevard delivers pizzas that would make any Italian granny sigh with delight and they'll have the same effect on you when you open the box too. Angelino's Trattoria is a homely place with a regular clientele who love its comfortable, but somewhat dated décor. Dark wood and magnolia paint don't make for a bright interior but who needs light when you're eating pizza? You don't need to see Angelino's pizzas to know how good they are. Just take a bite and your taste sense will do the rest. For a real over-the-top taste sensation try one of their prosciutto or shitake mushroom pizzas and your tongue, if it could, will give you the thumbs up.
If you've been over to get a souvenir photo of the Hollywood sign or been touring the Universal Studios, you’re not far from a pizzeria that makes the best take-out pizza in North Hollywood. Find Magnolia Boulevard and you'll find NoHo Pizza and Grill. Keep an eye out for the entry to the parking lot or you could shoot past and miss it. NoHo Pizza and Grill has a front corner position in an L-shaped strip of stores with a small parking lot out front. The décor borders on basic and is a little on the boring side with nothing much to look at while you're waiting for your order to cook. Noho's pizzas aren't boring at all but real showstoppers as you'll see when yours comes out the oven. Order the Jiggyz and you'll wonder why this good-looking pie topped with crispy chicken and green peppers isn't starring in the lead role of a movie.
Take a drive fifteen miles west of North Hollywood and you'll arrive at Woodland Hills. It's not exactly as the name might suggest but a built-up area in the outer suburbs of Los Angeles. As you're motoring down the US-101 on your way there you may well want to stop off at the Sherman Oaks Castle Park which is a huge theme park full of amusements for both adults and kids with a massive castle-like structure at its heart. If you have a bike take it with you and you can have a ride around the wooded cycle paths of the neighborhood and then drop in at Topanga Pizza on Ventura Boulevard for a pie.
Glendale is less than twenty minutes drive south of North Hollywood bordered in part by the four thousand acres of Griffith Park. It's a park you could quite easily spend a week in going around the different attractions like the film-worthy Bronson Caves used in the Batman TV series, the Griffith Observatory, the LA Zoo, and Travel Town. That's just naming a few and there are plenty more things to do there including hiking through the Fern Dell or visiting the Autry Museum of the American West. When you've seen it all or are too exhausted to continue, retire to the Ameci Pizza Kitchen and recover with a pie.
Head into the hills above North Hollywood by driving twenty minutes northeast to Montrose. Don't stop straight away but follow the signs, and the very windy road, up to the Big Tujunga Dam Overlook. It's a stupendously scenic drive and the views from the top are exceptional. On the way back down, head for the Pickens Canyon Park where you can hike in the tranquility of four thousand acres of gorge scenery and greenery. Follow that with a stroll around the Descanso Gardens to see the Boddy House and, as Montrose has no historic district, galleries, or museums to visit, go straight to Portobello's Cuisine for a pizza.
