1) Steve’s pizza

• Established: 1974
• Signature dish: NY-style Pepperoni Pizza

When it comes to pizza, Steve is a true Miami institution. Believed to be Miami’s best pizza since the opening, this pizzeria serves NY-style pies and slices.

The North Miami neighborhood joint will welcome you with its retro-nostalgic atmosphere: an old arcade game in the corner, photos of the regulars, and wooden booths covered with customer’s graffiti.

But we’re here for the pizza, especially for the classics like Pepperoni pizza. The crust is perfectly chewy and crunchy, and the sauce is on the sweeter side. Moreover, the pepperoni is the kind that forms little oil-collecting cups. And the slices are big, but foldable so you can eat with your hand(s).

Meat lovers can indulge their Steve’s Special pizza with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, green pepper, onion, mushroom, and anchovy on request. However, make sure to try their signature garlic rolls.

2) Frankie’s pizza

You can’t talk about pizza in Miami without mentioning the first-ever pizzeria in the city. Frankie’s is a mom-and-pop pizzeria, operating for more than 60 years just outside of metropolitan Miami in South-West Miami-Dade County.

It is the tradition and their well-kept secret recipes that makes this pizzeria so popular.

Its founders, Frank B. Pasquarella and his wife Doreen, opened it after they came back from a honeymoon trip. They noticed that there were “plenty of Italian restaurants, but no pizza shops” in Miami. Thus, on Valentine’s day 1955 Miami would witness the opening of the first pizzeria in town.

Frankie’s has by many, the best square pizza in town. The crust is thin and crispy (thinner and crispier than Detroit-style pizza though), with slightly burned edges. The sauce is sweet, and the toppings are traditional.

You can get a whole pie or pizza by the slice, but don’t miss out on their garlic rolls, too.

Today, after years of creating delicious pies, you can get the same quality pizza as in those early days. Therefore, Frankie’s has a large following, serving the fourth generation of loyal customers.

Through the years, Frankie’s won numerous awards including “Top 8 Gourmet Pizza Shops in America” in Bon Appétit Magazine in 1994 and 1995, “Best Pizza of Miami” in New Times in 1997 and 2007, and more.

3) Pizza Rustica

Welcome to the home of Roman-style pizza in Miami! The original joint was opened in 1996 on the corner of 9th Street and Washington in Miami Beach. Right from the beginning owner Pino Piroso wanted to create a place with affordable, handcrafted pizza for everyone.

Although you can get a round pie in Pizza Rustica, too it is the Roman-style rectangular pizza with a variety of unique toppings that make this place beloved by locals, and tourists.

They serve huge square pizza by the slice (that can pass as a meal). There are more than 30 varieties to choose from, with plenty of topping options including rosemary potato, pulled pork, goat cheese, juicy pineapple, and more.

Furthermore, they prepare the dough and sauce from scratch and use seasonal organic produce. Moreover, at Pizza Rustica, they use 100% natural chicken breasts, high-quality extra virgin olive oil, assorted, fresh herbs, and 100% whole milk cheese.

4) Andiamo! Brick Oven Pizza

There is a hidden pizza gem in the MiMo district. Situated in an old tire shop, this pizzeria will give you both retro and futuristic vibes as soon as you enter it. Whether you decide to eat in the glass-enclosed restaurant, or on the lovely patio, it doesn’t matter as long as you have a slice in your hand.

This award-winning, family-centered pizzeria serves delicious thin-crust brick-oven pies, yet thick enough to handle many toppings. The latter are always fresh and so diverse from pancetta, and basil pesto to rosemary potatoes and tuna.

If you’re up for a classic, make sure to try their New Yorker Pizza. It is made with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, extra virgin olive oil, and basil. Or choose their eponymous Andiamo pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil.

Meat lovers will love their Godfather pizza which features Italian sausage, pepperoni, meatballs, onions, peppers, mushrooms, olives, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan. A pile of all the good stuff!

5) ‘O Munaciello

This beloved MiMo pizzeria is an outpost of a famous pizza place in Florence, Italy.

The interior is embellished with angel figurines, resembling a similar atmosphere as the original location in Italy. But it’s not only the surroundings that will transfer you to Italy. It is the food that will complete the authentic southern Italian culinary experience.

‘O Munaciello specializes in Neapolitan-style pies. Charred, soft and pillowy on the edges, thin and juicy towards the center. All pies are available with regular, gluten-free, and black-dough crust. The latter is made with activated charcoal and is believed to aid digestion, too.

Since the opening, this restaurant-pizzeria fusion gained a following which consequently brought awards and features in lists such as “Top 100 in America” by OpenTable (2019), 25 best pizzerias in America by Yelp (2019), and more.

They serve more than 20 varieties of specialty pizzas with the freshest, high-quality toppings. All pies can be made with a regular, or a gluten-free crust. Vegan varieties are available, too.

Enjoy a White Truffle-Honey Pizza with blue cheese, candied walnuts, arugula, honey, and white truffle oil.
