You can notice the fusion of rustic and chic interior the moment you enter Verde pizza. This upscale trattoria located in Canton is owned by husband and wife duo, Edward Bosco and Marianne Kresevich.

Verde serves authentic Neapolitan pizza and many other Italian delicacies. They use authentic ingredients for the pies such as homemade mozzarella and burrata, homemade tomato sauce, and only preservative-free ’00’ flour, milled and blended in Italy.

Their wood-fired pizzas are cooked at 850 degrees for 90 seconds to create a soft crust with charred leopard spots. The result is an appealing and flavorsome pie.

Apart from the Italian dishes, they serve various domestic or imported wines, Italian craft beers, and award-winning cocktails.

Anything with homemade mozzarella or burrata is a must-try. You should also include Zanelotti and Prosciutto e Fico pies on your list. The first contains soppressata and wild mushrooms, and the second is a sweet and savory mix of figs and prosciutto.

3) Zella’s Pizzeria

In the center of West Baltimore, in the eclectic neighborhood of Hollins Roundhouse, you’ll find a real gem – Zella’s pizzeria.

This community staple was opened in 2007 by Cem and Julie. They wanted to create a pizza restaurant and a gathering space where great food, culture, and community will intertwine.

Cem learned the art of pizza making from his uncle in New Orleans and was responsible for the quality products and fresh ingredients. While Julie recreated the interior, making the place vibrant, fun, and welcoming. It was named after Julie’s grandmother, Manzella.

Even though the restaurant was sold in 2010, the current owners restored the local pizza spot to its original standards.

They serve medium-thick, crispy crust pies, calzones, sandwiches, and salads. And prepare the homemade dough daily — Zella’s pizzeria offers more than 30 different toppings and 5 sauces for the pies.

4) Matthew’s Pizza

Welcome to Baltimore’s first pizzeria.

This legendary pizza spot in Highlandtown serves delicious pizza, appetizers, salads, pasta, and desserts. Matthew’s is a tiny restaurant in Eastern Avenue that opened its doors back in 1943.

In fact, the whole restaurant is decorated with maps of Italy and newspaper pages from that year.

Their pizzas are a fusion of the thin-crust New York-style pie and the thick crust Chicago-style deep dish pies. You can order thin-crust pies and vegan pies too. The House favorite Crab Pie is a must-try, together with the spicy Fra Diavolo pizza.

5) Fortunato Brothers Pizza

Fortunato Brothers Pizza is a family owned restaurant. Founded in 1995, by the Dimeo Family, this place is working hard to create the best Italian food. They serve Specialty, White and Sicilian pizzas, hot and cold subs, Stromboli, calzones, salads, wings, desserts, and homemade pasta.

They use a traditional family recipe from Naples to create mouthwatering dishes. You should try their pizzas, especially the Original White Pizza with ricotta, mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes, and spinach.

6) Bertucci’s Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta

• Signature dish: Bertucci Pizza

Inspired by his grandmother’s kitchen in Italy, Joey Crugnale opened the first Bertucci’s Brick Oven Pizzeria in Davis Square, Somerville, MA. Centered around his custom-made brick oven, the pizzeria is a popular local spot.

From the beginning Bertucci’s used only fresh ingredients to make its signature pies. Many of them are included on the menu today, along with other delicacies like pasta, entrees, calzones, desserts, and salads.

Today, there are more than 50 Bertucci’s restaurants from New England to Virginia. Each of them transfers its passion for authentic Italian cooking, handcrafted into mouth watering dishes.

The dough is made from scratch and is given enough time to rise (48 hours to be exact), so you get fresh artisan pies, rolls, and focaccia bread. They make homemade tomato sauce with fresh herbs for pizzas and pasta and California tomatoes exclusively grown for Bertucci’s.

Any pizza is available with classic white, multigrain dough and cauliflower-base crust. What’s special about Bertucci's is their brick oven cooking technique. The pies are baked at 675 degrees and the intense heat locks in the freshness of the food and enhance the unique flavor.

Try their Sporkie Pizza with sweet Italian sausage, ricotta, mozzarella, and their signature house-made tomato sauce. Their Bertucci Pizza has extra Pepperoni and mozzarella, and tomato sauce.

7) Joe Squared

• Signature dish: Flag pizza

Welcome to Joe Squared Pizza in Station North. A pizza spot that bakes pies in a coal-burning oven.

You can enjoy a delicious square pie in this cozy spot with a laid-back atmosphere and daily live music.

They serve delicious food with fresh and local ingredients and have two signature award-winning dishes on their menu: coal-fired sourdough crust square pizza and gluten-free risotto.

For the sourdough crust they use a 200-year-old starter, organic Caputo flour, sea salt, and high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The thin-crusted pies are baked and charred in a 900-degree anthracite burning oven to perfection.

Their Flag pizza is split into three sections – the first with crushed tomato, mozzarella, provolone, Romano, Parmesan, and Asiago, the second with roasted garlic cream with mozzarella, cheddar, and ricotta and the third with pesto sauce and fresh mozzarella.

8) Michael’s Pizza & Subs

This family-owned restaurant opened its doors in 1986. Michael’s is an Italian carryout, dine-in, and delivery service that serves fresh pizza, subs, lasagna, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and more.

9) Isabella’s Brick Oven Pizza and Panini
