Find Local Pizza in Oshkosh, Wisconsin

While Oshkosh existed as a community from the early 1800s onwards, even fur trading or nearby mining activities didn't do much for the location's popularity with new settlers. It was the timber industry and the need for wood as a building material that eventually put Oshkosh firmly on the map. Timber was transported from the forests via a route down the Fox River and then across Lake Winnebago. Moving the timber was a long and laborious job until the railroad arrived in Oshkosh in the 1850s. The railway also awakened a new interest in the growing town from both industrialists and settlers. By1870 the town boasted a population of over twenty thousand, and had almost one hundred mills. Even a devastating fire couldn't stall the city's growth. Migrants continued to flock to Oshkosh well into the 20th century expanding the population even more. Some of the new arrivals were of Italian descent and they soon realized Oshkosh's potential for the restaurant business. Pizzerias were opened and pizza was served and still today remains one of the most favored dishes in the city.

Oshkosh in Wisconsin is known for thick crust pizza

Many of the migrants who arrived in Oshkosh came from larger cities like Milwaukee, Madison, Rockford, and even Chicago. One sure fact is that they didn't bring any pizza recipes with them from the cities they'd left behind, but ones from their home country as Oshkosh is known for thick crust pizza. Chicago-style pizza is hard to find in Oshkosh, but thick and thin crust is more or less everywhere. They're the two favorite styles of pizza in this Wisconsin city and let's face it, they are definitely two of the best that are made anywhere. They're both original types of pizza that have been baked in Italy for centuries. When something has stood the test of time that well, why change it? The only thing that should be changed is the topping ingredients and those should be restricted to things that belong on a pizza like bacon, tomato, shrimp, and pepperoni, not banana, broccoli, or mashed potato.

The great thing about Toppers pizzas is the toppings. They go all out to try and be a little different from the norm and succeed. Best Takeout Pizza in Oshkosh, Wisconsin

If you've just landed at Wittman Regional Airport or have been over at Camp Schoeller, you're not far from being able to pick up the best take-out pizza in Oshkosh. The pizzeria that serves the best take-out pizza is Pizza At Highway 44 which is on, as you may have guessed and quite correctly too, WI-44. Pizza 44 has a huge parking lot out front so no matter what vehicle you're in, be it an RV or an eighteen-wheeler, there's room for you to park. In truth, this pizzeria does look a little like a trucker's pit stop inside but the place is clean, the staff friendly and the pizzas great. Take a moment or two to muse over the menu before ordering as you're sure to find a topping combination you hadn't thought of that will set your taste buds on fire.

Fond du Lac

Fond du Lac is twenty-five miles south of Oshkosh and a city that lies against the most southerly shores of Lake Winnebago. Apart from the obvious aquatic activities to participate in by hiring a boat, there are several good museums where you can learn about local history or get the kids involved with interactive exhibits. There's also a water park and a sports park in Fond du Lac which are great for all ages as well as an arboretum full of native plants to have a wander around. When you're hungry, drop in at Joe's Fox Hut on North Main Street and you'll get a very decent pizza.

Adella Beach

When you want some proper chill-out time, take the Country Highway A north out of Oshkosh and head for Adella Beach. It's just a ten-mile trip which, once you've parked, will see you strolling along this city's beautiful lakeside stretch of sand. You may even catch a few rays and top up your tan if the Wisconsin weather treats you well. There's not a lot more of anything else to do at Adella Beach unless you go fishing. If you pick up a pie from Cranky Pat's Pizza you can eat by the water while watching the sun set on Lake Winnebago.

Appleton

Appleton is a city on the Fox River twenty miles north of Oshkosh that has history on just about every street corner. Take a look around the Hearthstone Historic House Museum where there are original era Thomas Edison light fittings still in working order, the Paper Discovery Center which is an old paper mill converted into a working museum, or the History Museum at the Castle which is dedicated to the escape artist Houdini. They're all fascinating and will keep you enthralled for hours. To finish off a good day, try a pizza from the Glass Nickel Pizza Company on West College Avenue.
