Origin Story
Husband and wife Ed and Margie Imo opened the first pizza parlor in the Hill neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri. Their five-year savings were invested in the small shop on the corner of Truman and Shaw.
- The year was 1964, Ed and Margie had no retail background and no formal culinary experience. However, they had an entrepreneurial spirit, determination, and passion for pizza making. Soon after, their name and square-cut pies became one of the staples of St. Louis pizza history.
- Only eight months after opening their first restaurant, Ed and Margie’s friends asked for a second location. Ed and Margie delivered, thus the second location was opened in 1965.
- Shortly, the couple had multiple stores throughout St. Louis and Missouri, reaching 30 pizza joints by 1985. The same year Imo’s Pizza opened the brand up to franchising.
- Today Imo’s is still a family restaurant, operated by Ed and Margie’s children. They preserve Imo’s tradition whilst continuing to expand the brand’s footprint.
Imo’s Pizza Culture
There are a few key points on which Imo’s Pizza culture is based. Firstly, Ed and Margie anticipated the need for pizza delivery even before they came into the pizza business. They were ordering pies for pickup and asked themselves: “Wouldn’t it be nice if someone would deliver the pizza to us?”
The idea led to a real revolution in the pizza industry – Imo’s Pizza delivery. Furthermore, they enlisted Margie’s brother to make the deliveries from the very beginning.
Moreover, for the original pizzeria, they hired a chef who introduced the game-changing pizza ingredient – the Provel cheese. The square-cut pizza topped with this cheddar, swiss, and provolone combination became an instant hit.
The Menu
Imo’s Pizza specializes in St. Louis-style pizza on a thin, cracker-like crust, topped with gooey Provel cheese. The crust is covered with their homemade sauce, high-quality ingredients, and the signature Provel cheese.
The pies are covered with toppings from edge to edge and are cut into squares. What is known as a “party cut” in Imo’s is called Square Beyond Compare.
