Origin Story

Among the oldest pizzerias in Illinois, Aurelio's Pizza has a rich history behind it. First opened in Homewood, IL in 1959 by Joe Aurelio, Aurelio's was a mere storefront with 4 tables and one pizza oven. Still, there was a big dream behind it.

Working 7 days a week, Joe was his own cook, waiter, and delivery man. Italian beef sandwiches were the star of the show at first, but then he got creative. Through trial and error, he kept making changes to the dough, the sauces, and the toppings of his pies until he reached that perfect combination that just worked.

By using homemade Italian sausage and fresh ingredients, his pizza sales went up and Aurelio's Pizza truly took off.

By 1962, Joe had already rented the two adjoining storefronts and turned one into a family-friendly space, while the other was reserved for the younger crowd. He expanded the kitchen, hired staff, and was ready to truly cater to the greater community.

Almost 10 years later Aurelio's became the first Illinois franchise, fifth in the United States. The chain started expanding beyond the Illinois borders, quickly becoming a staple wherever it showed up.

By '77, Joe's vision and dream truly came to life with him introducing the world's biggest pizzeria at the time in Homewood. He worked on this store for a year and when it finally opened, thousands of customers visited it every week, creating unforgettable memories and the history we speak of today.

After that, it was all about expansion, perfecting customer service, and putting the finishing touches on the dream that is now a wonderful reality.
