We all love a tasty appetizer, and to be quite frank, it doesn't get much better than wings.
Also known as Buffalo wings, or even hot or chicken wings, this snack is always welcome. Whether you're watching some TV show, or a sports game, or simply want to satisfy your tastebuds, wings are the right choice for any occasion.
To show our appreciation for this awesome food, today we're going to take a look at its preparation and history.
This dish is made of uncoated chicken wings that are deep-fried and then slathered in sauce. The sauce is made from melted butter, vinegar, red pepper, and hot sauce. It can be hot, medium, or mild.
Usually, wings are served with carrots and celery sticks as well as dipping sauces like blue cheese or ranch dressing.
The origin story of wings involves a place called the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York.
Back in 1964, it was owned by Teresa Bellissimo and Frank, who were husband and wife.
In those years, chicken wings weren't of much use to cooks. Well, other than as an extra ingredient for soups.
But all that was about to change - big time!
One night, Teresa and Frank had a surprise visit from their son Dominic and a bunch of his college buddies. Naturally, Teresa wanted to offer something to the guests. Preferably some delicious snack.
And that's when the idea hit her! She had some chicken wings in the kitchen and decided to deep fry them. As if that wasn't creative enough, she also added cayenne hot sauce on top.
Just like that, the now extremely popular wings were born. Now, there are some alternative versions of the story but the gist of it is the same.
This dish became very popular in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1977, the city of Buffalo even declared July 29 as Chicken Wing Day. It has been celebrated ever since!
There are also competitive eating events taking place at festivals.
The first one was hosted in Philadelphia in 1993. It’s called the Wing Bowl and it draws huge crowds every year. The current record holder is Joey Chestnut. In 2008, he ate 241 pieces in two 14 minutes intervals.
But these events happen in many restaurants as well. And some customers get public credit for doing the challenge. This includes posting their picture on the bar’s website or wall. Or giving them a shirt or a free snack.
In the meantime, sauces other than the Buffalo one have been created. These include the Maple/Bacon Glaze and the Blueberry BBQ.
Also, there is a similar dish called boneless wings. And it is served with the same sauces. It is made of boneless chicken parts coated in flour. These can be baked or fried.
The dish is also known as wyngz. It is cheaper and eating it is less messy.
A serving of six Buffalo wings contains around 528 calories. This includes 39g of total fat or 50% of the daily value. The percentage is based on a 2000-calorie diet.
In addition, there are 132mg of cholesterol (44%), 630mg of sodium (27%), and about 15g of total carbohydrates (6%). What's more, the amount of protein is 27g.
On top of that, there are 1% vitamin D, 2% calcium, 10% iron, and 6% potassium.
