In the 1940’s, Salvatore, our grandfather, was working in the town's local bakery, making freshly baked breads, all sorts of pizza & specializing in “sfingione”.The “sfingione” is a Sicilian Pizza made with anchovies, caciocavallo cheese, bread crumbs & scallions.
In 1969, grandfather Salvatore and my Father opened their own bakery in Italy. Although business was good, by 1973 the Italian economy was in a big depression. Opportunity knocked when he was offered a work contract in New York City. My father left the bakery in the hands of my Grandfather & immigrated to America hoping that his gift as an Artisan baker would open new doors for him.
He was hired at the famous landmark deli in Little Italy, known as “Italian Food Center”. It is still located on the corner of Grand Street & Mulberry Street. It is famous for its bread, focaccia & pizza. My Father baked all day long, so all the sandwiches were made with hot fresh bread. He baked bread & pizza for many famous clients like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin,Tony Bennet & Ronald Regan. Although He loved working at the Italian Food Center, he knew he had to focus on the future of his family. In 1983, My Father decided to venture out & opened his first little pizza shop in Brooklyn.
He had a plan, he taught his family everything he knew about food & business. Later when his sons, were grown up & acquired all the experience from their father and grandfather, they opened another location in Brooklyn Park Slope. In 2006 we left Brooklyn, and opened “Marabella Italian Restaurant” in Washington, North Carolina.
Marabella Italian Restaurant has acquired over 75 years of Italian family tradition in baking & culinary from three generations. Our Italian dishes are made from century old recipes handed down from our family throughout the years. In 2009, Massimo & Salvatore opened “Marabella Old World Pizza” in Greenville, North Carolina. Marabella Old World Pizza focuses on making traditional pizza the way it is made in Italy & real NewYork-Style Pizza.
We also make Panini & Panzerotti. All of our food is prepared daily. We make fresh dough, sauces, mozzarella cheese, pasta & our delicious meatballs on premises in all of our locations. The Washington & Greenville locations are run by Salvatore & Massimo. My Father still travels constantly to all the locations to make sure everything is run “Nino’s Way”...With Quality Food, Personality & Love.
