Origin Story

The roots behind Papa Romano's Pizza take us back to Sicily, Italy. A small village on the island of Sicily was the home of Papa Romano and his family. Papa Romano was known to be one of the best baker around. Especially famous was his pizza. Made in a stone-hearth broiler, the pizza was a true fan favorite.

When an American tourist passed through the village, he had a taste of Papa Romano's creations and was adamant that people back in America would simply love Papa's baked goods. Inspired by this, Papa Romano consulted the family. Should they stay in Italy or go to the Land of opportunity?

The decision was unanimous and soon after, the Romano family arrived in the States. They settled in Michigan and Papa Romano got to work almost immediately. The response they got was incredible! People just loved their creations and many other restaurants started trying to copy what Papa Romano had going on. However, there was no one who actually could replicate the suppleness, the taste, and the overall feel of Papa's baked goods.

All of this happened back in the 1970s. Today, Papa Romano's Pizza still stands strong. At one point, the pizzeria chain had over 60 stores in Michigan. Even though there are fewer today, they all still sport the exact same deliciousness as they did 50 years ago, with patrons enjoying this authentic old world cuisine every single day.

Pizza Culture

The pizza at Papa Romano's Pizza is always made fresh. The Romano family was taught that what you make yourself, with your own hands, can never be replaced by something mass manufactured. In honor of this lesson, they still insist that the dough used to make Papa Romano's pizza everywhere is hand tossed and freshly made.

As for the sauce, that's also made daily. Inspired by Mama Romano's tomato sauce recipe, it's rich, tasty, and original. Coating every pizza pie that exits Papa Romano's ovens, this sauce is a perfect mix of savory and sweet and gives the pies a little something you can't find anywhere else.
