Origin Story

Sammy's Pizza was started some 70 years ago in a small town in Minnesota, at a time when pizza wasn't even on the radar for most people in the US. Sam Perrella, an owner of a small cafe in Keewatin, MN, heard the stories of WWII veterans stationed in Italy about all the new cuisine they have discovered.

The stories were amazing and filled with so many things, but Sam was fascinated by the pizza. It was then that the dream was born. Sam was going to open a pizzeria of his own. He did a bit of research, visiting Chicago as a part of it, where he learned about square-cut pizza and got recipe ideas.

When he came back home, he and his wife Louise got to work and combined new knowledge with some traditional family recipes they discovered. Soon enough, everything was ready. Sammy's Pizza was about to open its doors.

It was the neighboring town of Hibbing, MN that held the first Sammy's Pizza location, one that still exists today. With lots of hard work on serving quality food, Sammy's single location grew to the 14 they have today. Grandpa Sam's legacy is alive and well and the old family recipes are still present on Sammy's Pizza menu today.

Pizza Culture

We already mentioned Sammy's Pizza's Chicago connection, but also their traditional, family recipes. Sammy's pizza is always cut in square slices, in true Chi-Town fashion, but the flavors are all creative choices made by the Perella family.

Way back in '54, Grandpa Sam created the perfect red sauce that's still being used today on all pies Sammy's Pizza serves. They also cut their ingredients by hand, source them locally, and prep their signature dough daily.

The dough of Sammy's Pizza is Chi-style, but it's not deep-dish. Instead, it's just thick enough, with curled edges so that all the flavor can stay in. They then top it with their superb ingredients and sauce and bake it to perfection.

An absolute highlight on Sammy's pizza menu would be Sammy's Special Pizza, which was Grandpa Sam's favorite pie. Featuring Italian sausage, green peppers, and onions, the pie is simple, yet delicious and definitely something you have to try!
