The Bronx

New York City has the best pizza, it’s a fact. All five boroughs have staple pizzerias with a huge following from loyal customers. Locals have their favorite joints that deliver the same taste and quality every time.

But what differs the Bronx from the other four boroughs is the vibrant pizza scene. Here you become aware that pizza is the ultimate street food. A delicious slice at the counter, or on the go is all you need for a satisfying meal.

But don’t let that fool you – street pizza is equally delicious as the one served in a fancy restaurant. Some will say even better. The Bronx is here to prove that.

With two Italian neighborhoods, Morris Park and Arthur Avenue in Belmont, the Bronx has the Italian pizza culture intertwined in two “Little Italy” locations. The restaurants operating there, along with the small, hole in the wall pizza joints, and mom and pop pizzerias, make the true pizza culture of the Bronx.

Find out where you can get the best pizza in the Bronx and order mouthwatering slices and pies through the Slice app.

1) Tommy’s Pizza Bronx

  • Established: 1977
  • Signature dish: Cheese pizza
  • Working hours: Open 7 days a week Monday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

“There’s a big difference between the big chains and the independent pizzerias”. That’s the sign in the window that will welcome you at the entrance of this neighborhood pizzeria. To see if this is true, you only need one bite from their renowned pizza.

They make crispy thin crust NY-style pies for more than 40 years and have a massive following. Local pizza lovers enjoy their semolina covered pizza crust, topped with sweet sauce, and just the right amount of cheese.

Besides delicious pizza, this old school pizza joint in Throgs Neck is selling whole pies and pizza by the slice, calzones, rolls, and beef patties.

2) Cross Bronx Pizza

  • Established: Approximately around 1998
  • Signature dish: Gigantic NY-style slices
  • Working hours: Open 7 days a week. Monday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

With pizza more is always better, right? Well, you may stop at just one slice in Cross Bronx Pizza since they serve gigantic slices. They make whole pies, too, but we’re here for the pizza by the slice.

The slices are around 14 to 16 inches long, so it is nearly impossible to handle them without being cut in half.

This hole in the wall pizza joint in Castle Hill neighborhood makes the best street pizza you can get in the Bronx. They serve NY-style pizza, perfectly crispy, yet thick enough to be folded. Pizza chefs are generous with the toppings, so you get the perfect dough to sauce to cheese ratio.

Located on Cross Bronx Expressway it is just 2 blocks away from the place where JLo grew up. And yes, she grabs a slice from Cross Bronx pizza now and then.

Just keep in mind it’s a cash-only pizza joint, so come prepared. And hungry, too.

3) Jerome Pizza Bronx

  • Established: 2011
  • Signature dish: Grandma Slice
  • Working hours: Closed on Friday. Monday to Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Located in Bedford Park, Jerome Pizza is another local’s favorite pizza spot. Serving delicious NY-style pie, alongside Sicilian pizzas, grandma pies, and specialty pizzas.

Besides pizza, Jerome Pizza makes flavorful appetizers, salads, soups, calzones, heroes, rolls, wraps, pasta dishes, seafood, and more.

But we’re here for the pizza. You can simply choose a plain NY-style slice, or go for a plain Sicilian, or Grandma slice. However, you must try their Grandma spinach pizza.

4) Pugsley

  • Established: 1984
  • Signature dish: Plain Slice
  • Working hours: Closed on Friday. Monday to Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Located in Fordham Manor, this family-operated pizzeria is another Staple in the Bronx. Owners Sal and Pina Natale created a warm and welcoming place with some amazing Italian food.

However, you go to Pugsley not just for the food, but for the whole experience. Sal (who is a former musician) plays the saxophone or hits a gong when an order is ready. And if you’re lucky enough (as many of the visitors are), you can hit the gong, too.

Pugsley has a huge following and is visited by students, loyal customers, locals, and tourists, too.

Furthermore, they have more than 30 NY-style pizza varieties, gluten-free pies, and heart-shaped pizzas. The toppings range from pepperoni to anchovies, eggplant, vodka penne, buffalo chicken, and more. The pie comes with a soft and pillowy crust, with a decent crisp on the bottom.

Don’t miss out on their wings, chicken roll, and garlic knots, too.

5) Louie & Ernie's Pizza

  • Established: 1959
  • Signature dish: Pizza with sausage
  • Working hours: Open 7 days a week. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM; Wednesday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

According to the locals, this is where you can get the best pizza in the Bronx. And in the city, too. It is a family-owned old school pizzeria in Schuylerville, operated by brothers John and Cosimo Tiso.

They were working at Louie & Ernie’s when the original owner Ernie Ottuso faced some health issues. Thus, they became the new owners. Aged 16 and 20, and with a huge responsibility to preserve and continue the legacy of the famous pizzeria. And they sure delivered.

They are specialized in NY-style pies and serve whole pies, pizza by the slice, and calzones. The menu is not a large one, but every item on the menu is brought to perfection.

The sausage pizza is a must-try, but you can’t be wrong with any other choice. White pie lovers will enjoy Louie & Ernie’s pizza with gooey mozzarella and ricotta. Up for a classic? Get the plain, cheesy, crispy, yet chewy, thin-crust slice.

6) Crosby Pizza Stop

  • Established: 1973
  • Signature dish: Round Sicilian Pizza
  • Working hours: Open 7 days a week. Monday from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM; Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Crosby Pizza Stop is another pizza place with a tradition and good reputation. Owner Vincent Leo is in the pizza business for over 45 years, creating pies with passion and dedication.

Located on Crosby Avenue in the heart of the Bronx, this pizza joint makes NY-style cheese pie gluten-free pizza, Sicilian pizza, and house pizza, too.

Moreover, they create amazing artisan pies with toppings like portobello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli rabe, arugula, artichoke hearts, Nutella crème, and more.

Furthermore, they serve exotic pizza, and pizza by the slice, so there is a pie or slice for everyone.

The NY-style pie has a crispy crust, melty cheese, and tangy sauce, and the slices are huge. All pies are made with house-made fresh sauces and high-quality ingredients.

Besides appetizing pizza, they make calzones, appetizers, salads, hot heroes, and paninis, too.

However, Crosby Pizza Stop is famous for its Finger Lickin’ Round Sicilian Pizza. As the name suggests, it is round unlike the traditional rectangle pie, and is piled up with cheese. It goes perfectly with some pepperoni on top or any other topping by preference.
