WORDPRESS INSTRUCTIONS WITH MULTIPLE RESTAURANTS
Note for Developers & Experienced Users
Your Slice Partner Success manager will share a Javascript snippet which contains a unique identifier for your restaurant. This code snippet should be added in the the head of the website, like a Facebook or Google tracking code snippet. It won't need to be changed.
The Smart Button settings like style, content, and positioning can be managed by the Partner Success Manager or by the restaurant owner through Slice's Owners Portal (self-service). Settings changes like these won't require any code changes on the website.
In Wordpress, many websites already leverage a plugin to manage head/footer snippets. Google Tag Manager, or a functions.php script would work as well. The instructions below is using a simple and free Wordpress plugin as an example but Slice doesn't necessarilly recommend this plugin in particular.
Because this script will trigger a visual change on the webpage (banner, button, etc) we recommend prioritizing it as much as possible in the head.
Instructions for Plugin Method
There are multiple ways to place the one-time Smart Button code in Wordpress. Below, you'll find simple instructions that don't require a web developer. If you're already working with a web developer, share this page with them or contact your Partner Success Manager.
First, check if you already have a similar plugin. Skip Step 2 if you already have a similar plugin. Subsequent steps will vary slightly depending on the plugin you have.
Slice doesn't necessarilly recommend this plugin. There are many other similar plugins that will work. WPCode is another plugin that is often recommended in blogs and forums.
Multiple Restaurants in One Website
If you have one website that represents multiple shops, Smart Buttons still works! The steps are a little different and will differ slightly by plugin (or any other method you choose to use). If your website only has one location, go back to these basic instructions.
You'll need:
- One page or post (Wordpress lingo) for each restaurant. That means, each location needs to have it's own dedicated page on your website.
- A unique Smart Button script for each restaurant. The copy/paste code is specific to each individual shop, so each script will have a unique restaurant ID. Your Partner Success Manager can provide these or find them in the Website section of Owners Portal.
Once you confirm you've got these two things covered, please continue on to the instructions below!
These instructions use a plugin, which is recommended for novice users.
STEP 1: GET CODES FOR EACH SHOP
- Get your unique code snippets for each restaurant from your Partner Success Manager or in the Website section in Owners Portal.
- Be sure to not get the code snippets and shops mixed up. You'll need to get the right code on each restaurant's page.
- The code you're given will look something like this example image. You'll notice "script" at the beginning and end. This image is an example only. Your code will have a unique restaurant ID specific to your shop.
- Try not to copy it into any other word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs as these could change some parts of the code.
STEP 2: INSTALL PLUGIN
- From the main Wordpress dashboard, on the left side, click Plugins. Then click Add New.
- In the upper-right, type "head footer code", search, and find the Head & Footer Code option offered by "TechWebUX.com".
- Click Install Now. Then click Activate. Now the new plugin is installed.
Note: There are many diffent plugins and different methods that can be used for Wordpress sites. The plugin we've used is just an example. Other plugins will work similarly. WPCode is another plugin often recommended in online blogs and forums, but the steps will be slightly different. We do recommend using a plugin in this guide because modifying the functions.php file should only be done by experienced Wordpress developers.
STEP 3: MAIN SETTINGS
- Open the plugin settings by selecting Tools on the left side. Click the name of the plugin which is Head & Footer Code.
- SKIP the empty fields like "HEAD Code" (Different from instructions for websites with only one shop location).
- Find the HEAD Priority field and update to a high value of "999".
- Scroll to the bottom to the Article specific settings section. Select both options labeled Posts and Pages
- Click Save Changes at the bottom.d
STEP 4: SETTINGS FOR EACH PAGE
The previous step enabled new settings for your Posts and Pages
- If your location pages are "Pages" in Wordpress, go to the All Pages settings on the left-side menu. This is most common. However, if your location pages are set up as Wordpress "Posts", then select All Posts settings on the left.
- Click Edit under the Location-specific page from the list of Pages or Posts. You'll come back later to do this for each location.
- In the editor, scroll down below the page content. In the Head Code field, Copy and Paste your code for this specific restaurant page.
- There is a Behavior drop down. Confirm the selection is Append.... If your not using this plugin for any other code snippets (Analytics, Facebook,...) then "Replace..." will also work. The Append option is safest, however.
- Click Save Changes at the bottom.
Repeat for each restaurant location.
These steps will vary depending on which Wordpress plugin you choose. We've chosen this one as an example.
