The word antipasto literally means "before the meal." Some people wrongly assume that it translates to "before the pasta" but that's not really the case.

More specifically, the word comes from the Latin terms "ante" and "pastus" which mean "before" and "food" respectively.

Hence, antipasti are the traditional first meal or appetizer in Italian cuisine. Their goal is to get your appetite going. Standard ingredients include cured meats, different kinds of cheese, olives, seafood, and more.
