##What Is a Lobster Roll Made Of? When summer arrives, and the long hot days are here, we all need something to refreshen us.
In regards to what we eat, seafood is a great choice to combat the warm weather. And to be more specific, what makes for a perfect summer dish is the lobster roll!
That's right, for today, we present to you one of the best foods coming from New England.
A lobster roll, as the name suggests, is made of lobster meat and a bread roll. The latter is typically a New England-style hot dog bun. And a grilled one at that.
In addition, some other ingredients may be used as well. These include:
That being said, there are two main types - the Maine and Connecticut lobster roll. Depending on which one you get, the preparation and serving methods will slightly differ.
The main difference is that the Maine lobster roll is served with cold lobster meat. It also comes with mayonnaise, and the hot dog bun is cut on the top. As for the meat itself, it consists of claw, knuckle, and tail meat.
In contrast, the Connecticut-style lobster roll is served warm in a toasted bun. And instead of getting covered with mayonnaise, the fresh lobster meat is heated in melted butter.
As mentioned earlier, the lobster roll is a staple of New England cuisine.
The story goes that it was invented in Connecticut in 1929. This took place in a restaurant in Milford called Perry's. Apparently, the owner Harry created it to satisfy a request from a customer passing by.
This original version of the sandwich was served hot. Once added to the menu, the word spread, and soon enough this dish became quite popular across the Connecticut coast.
However, it wasn't until a few decades later that it became well-known nationwide.
In the meantime, during the 1940s, the New England-style hot dog bun was invented. The credit for this goes to the hotel chain Howard Johnson's. They had a sandwich with fried clams and were in need of a top sliced bread roll that would make things more convenient to prepare and serve.
But back to our lobster sandwich story. In the 1970s, a takeout restaurant in Maine called Red's Eats helped to further spread the popularity of the dish.
Then, in the 1980s, Jasper White did the same when he started selling lobster rolls in Boston. He's a true culinary legend in the city notable for his waterfront eatery Jasper's and Summer Shack locations.
Moreover, in 1996, Rebecca Charles begin serving it in her restaurant in Greenwich Village in NYC called Pearl Oyster Bar.
Today, the lobster roll is a popular dish all across America. We may even consider it to be more on the luxurious side. This is interesting given the fact lobsters were initially looked at as poor man's food. That's because at the time they were abundantly available.
In a serving of 309 grams, this lobster sandwich contains around 617 calories. This includes 26g of total fat or 33% of the daily value based on a 2000-calorie diet.
Additionally, there are 165mg of cholesterol (55%), 1142mg of sodium (50%), 40g of total carbohydrates (15%), 540mg of potassium (11%), and 51g of protein.
