Refreshing drinks are always a great choice. But this especially holds true during summer. The weather is hot, you get thirsty, and you definitely need something cool to drink.
And what better option than a classic lemonade? This fantastic drink is very popular in America and for a good reason. Of course, people enjoy it around the world, too, but we Americans really love it.
There are many varieties of this drink (more on this later) but the typical choice in the USA is the so-called cloudy lemonade. It is made of lemon juice, water, and a sweetening ingredient. This can be something like cane sugar or honey.
What separates it from the soft drink lemonade, which is popular in other countries such as the UK, is that it's not carbonated. In other words, the lemon juice is used fresh.
Lemonade is served cold, though if you have a sore throat, a hot lemonade may be of help.
It is also a tradition for kids in America to sell it on lemonade stands in their neighborhoods when it's summertime.
The place of birth of this awesome beverage is actually Egypt. Back in the 13th and 14th centuries, Egyptians were making drinks by using lemons, honey, and dates. And this was the original lemonade recipe if you will.
Moreover, they had a drink called "qatarmizat," which was made with lemon juice and sugar.
Years later, in 1676, lemonade was being sold in Paris. This was done by the company named Compagnie de Limonadiers. Their employees would carry tanks filled with the drink on them, and sell it to people on the street.
As for its carbonated counterpart, an important milestone was the invention of carbonated water. This took place in 1767 and its inventor was Joseph Priestley.
Still, the first mention of actual carbonated lemonade is from 1833. At the time, it was sold in refreshment bars in Britain.
On that note, the popular British brand for carbonated lemonade - R. White's, first started selling their product in 1845.
Aside from the cloudy lemonade, there are several other notable variations.
One of them is the so-called pink lemonade. It is made by using extra ingredients i.e. different types of fruit. Or color additives could be utilized as well.
The origin of pink lemonade is often tied to Henry Allott. He was a circus employee who unintentionally dropped some red cinnamon candies in a lemonade. This story was documented in 1912.
Still, Henry isn't the only circus worker who is thought to have invented the pink lemonade. There was another one, Pete Conklin, who apparently created it in 1857. According to his brother, he had sold it as "strawberry lemonade."
Other types include clear lemonade, which is a carbonated drink; brown lemonade - made with brown sugar; citron pressé (popular in French, which allows the customer to mix it on their own); and more.
A single cup of lemonade (8 fluid ounces) contains about 99 calories. This includes 26g of total carbohydrates or 9% of the daily value based on a 2000-calorie diet.
Moreover, due to the presence of citric acid, lemonade offers the health benefit of preventing kidney stones, as based on calcium.
