Fried chicken is one of the tastiest foods on our planet. It is often described as “crunchy” and “juicy”. But also “spicy” if you put some hot sauce on top. This dish is made by coating chicken breast in batter and then frying them. The three main frying methods are pressure frying, pan-frying, and deep-frying.
What makes it crispy is the added breading which also preserves the juices in the meat.
This way of cooking chicken is associated with the Southern parts of the United States. In fact, it’s a staple food of the South! However, this dish wasn't invented in America.
Even though fried chicken is an American favorite, the dish was actually invented by the Scottish. They were the first to deep fry chicken in fat.
Before that, people would boil or bake it. Scottish immigrants moved to America where they continued to cook chicken in that same way.
The first recipe for frying chicken appeared in “The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy” by Hannah Glasse, in 1747. It was called “To Marinate Chicken”. And the instructions were to fry floured chicken parts in hog’s lard.
This dish used to be saved only for special occasions. Before the Second World War, not many chickens were available. And chicken meat was quite expensive and difficult to cook.
Once the farming of chicken improved there was a potential to make profits. People discovered how to fry chicken in large quantities and still serve it warm. This was a game-changer!
Even though the Scottish invented fried chicken, it was the African-Americans who truly refined the dish. They added a bit of creativity to the prep process and a lot of spices and gave us the fried chicken we know and love today.
There are several types of fried chicken and even though they’re all made in a similar fashion, differences still exist! We’d like to go over the most popular ones!
Crispy Fried Chicken An absolute fan-favorite, this is a type of chicken that features an incredibly crunchy skin. At the same time, the meat inside remains juicy and soft. This recipe starts by tenderizing the meat and submerging it in brine. Then, the pieces of chicken get coated in a seasoned flour mixture followed by eggs.
Some like adding a bit of baking soda to the mix for extra crispiness! Once fully coated, the chicken is fried until golden brown.
Deep Fried Chicken This is chicken made with the deep-frying method. By using a deep fryer the chicken parts are fully put in hot fat. Then, the chicken is cooked at a very high and constant temperature. The prep recipe is very similar to the one for crispy fried chicken, the only difference is the frying temperature!
Keto Fried Chicken The Keto-friendly chicken should be baked rather than fried. For the breading, almond flour and parmesan can be used so that the carbs are low. Keto fried chicken is amazing for anyone on a diet.
Vegan Fried Chicken Chickpea flour is often used to prevent the gluten from becoming sticky and hard to eat. And the standard substitute for the meat is seitan. The mouthwatering seitan is deep-fried and free of cholesterol. Also, adding spices gives more flavor to the dish.
All of these types of chicken can be eaten as the main dish with fries on the side. However, another perfect variation is the fried chicken sandwich!
Fried Chicken Sandwich This sandwich is made by frying chicken and putting it on a toasted bun. Then, you add a sauce and get a very crispy and juicy dish. A typical choice for the sauce is smoky paprika. And the chicken is usually marinated in buttermilk.
This dish is popularly made with a Brioche bun, big pickles, buttermilk battered chicken, and mayo. The batter is very crunchy, the buns are extra sweet, and the pickles are crisp. However, the meat is still so juicy and it tastes incredible along with the creamy mayonnaise.
