Origin Story

The first Hungry Howie’s Pizza was opened in 1973 by Jim Hern. It was located in Taylor, Michigan, which is a suburb close to Detroit.

Jim turned a hamburger shop into a carry-out and delivery pizzeria. Later, he partnered with Steve Jackson who was a delivery driver there.

The two continued to expand the business. And in 1983, the first Hungry Howie’s Pizza franchise was awarded. In just three years, there were 65 franchises opened. And the number surpassed 160 by the end of the decade.

A few milestones followed:

• 1995 - the 300th location opened
• 1999 - the 400th location opened
• 2004 - Pizza Today gave them the “Chain of the Year” award
• 2005 - the 500th location opened

But a crucial change happened in 1983. That’s when Hungry Howie’s Pizza developed their signature Flavored Crust!

They started testing the flavored crust concept after a franchisee put butter and sesame seeds on their crusts. And in 1985 they rolled it out nationally.

Pizza Culture

Their 8 mouthwatering flavored crusts are butter cheese, ranch, butter, asiago cheese, cajun, onion, sesame, and garlic herb.

Another huge part of Hungry Howie’s mission is to offer support. Hence, their “Love, Hope & Pizza” campaign.

Since 2009, they’ve been dedicated to spread awareness and raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Every October, their pizza boxes are made pink. And as of 2020, they have donated over 3 million dollars.

But they’re also helping the local communities. Usually, when a new Hungry Howie’s franchise opens, it donates part of the profits to a local school or charity.

Hungry Howie’s Pizza menu is full of delicious food! They have pizza, subs, fresh salads, pasta, Howie bread, Howie wings, Howie rolls, drinks, and more.

Their pies are made with only high-quality ingredients. This includes 100% mozzarella cheese and freshly made dough every day. And then you have the 8 Flavored Crust options. You can add these to a deep dish crust, a thin crust, a round crust, and more.

The Howie Maui pizza comes with pineapple, mozzarella cheese, bacon, and ham. And the BBQ Chicken with sweet BBQ sauce, bacon, mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken breast, and red onions.

Another great pick is the mouthwatering Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger pizza. It is made with cheddar cheese, ground beef, mozzarella, and bacon.

Or you can try the amazing Veggie pie! This one comes with mushrooms, green peppers, mozzarella cheese, black olives, red onions, and tomatoes.
